Sickick - "Hittem" (dir. Jay Baskey)
Yeah, I'm a little biased with this one. =) My first big-budget video with an amazing artist, a cast of 50+, and a crew of super-talented people. Best day ever.
SonReal - "Preach" (dir. Dane Collison)
Shot around North America. Simple, amazingly executed.
Die Antwoord - "Ugly Boy" (dir. NINJA)
Great cameos and art direction x1000. Die Antwoord's image is authentic insanity. There's something about South Africa, man...
Childish Gambino (ft. Problem) - "Sweatpants" (dir. Hiro Murai)
No one in hip-hop marches to the beat of their own drummer like Gambino. This video goes deep down the rabbit hole.
DJ Snake (ft. Lil Jon) - "Turn Down For What" (dir. Daniels)
If you don't like this video, you hate fun.
Keys 'N' Krates - "Are We Faded" (dir. Peter Huang)
Such a brilliant concept, filmed with a potato.
Majid Jordan - "Her" (dir. Common Good)
Gorgeous. Elevating the performance video, using black + white to highlight texture and contrast (not just because it's "artsy").
Tyga, Nicki Minaj + Lil Wayne - "Senile" (dir. Colin Tilley)
Like a series of acid trippin' video postcards, featuring every colour in existence. Unexpected stuff from Young Money and Colin Tilley.
Skrillex - "Fuck That" (dir. Nabil)
Nabil with another beautifully shot, epic video. Excellence is a habit with this guy.
Jamie xx - "Sleep Sound" (dir. Sofia Mattioli & Cherise Payne)
Can music be experienced by people who can't hear it?
"...she was deaf and could almost feel the music by watching me...love, imagination, silence and music join together to become a whole."
I'm floored by this. The best video of the year.
M.I.A. - "Bring The Noize" (dir. Ben Newman)
A religious gathering set to a schizophrenic track by my future wife. The editing in this is unreal. Re-watch it to catch those flash cuts.
Thugli - "Run This" (dir. Amos Leblanc + Ohji Inoue)
Psycho thug cops run the streets while influencing a generation that'll take them down. A real gut-check video and sick trap tune from the T.O. boys.
Eminem - "Rap God" (dir. Rich Lee)
Admittedly, I've never been a huge fan of Em, but he absolutely murders this track and Rich Lee does the same for the video. Shoutout to Max Headroom.
Gesaffelstein - "Pursuit" (dir. Fleur & Manu)
I have no idea what in the hell is going on in this video, but I love it. It's got style for weeks. The French electro scene always amazes.
Brodinski ft. Theophilus London - "Gimme Back The Night" (dir. HELMI)
The dude shot an entire video with a camera in his mouth. "A" for effort and for not swallowing that thing.
Miley Cyrus - "We Can't Stop" (dir. Diane Martel)
Every hip hop and pop video with a house party tries to out-do each other. Diane Martel wins by throwing a party on bath salts.
Commander Chris Hadfield - "Space Oddity" (dir. Chris Hadfield)
The coolest astronaut ever made the first music video in space. What else is there to say?
Disclosure - "When a Fire Starts to Burn" (dir. Bo Mirosseni)
A religious experience, for sure. A prime example of a video nailing the vibe of a track and taking ownership of it.
Kanye West - "New Slaves" (dir. by ???)
Yeah, it's not a music video, in the traditional sense, but it's 2013. Traditional media and promotion methods are for people who aren't Kanye West. This was projected on 66 walls around the world and re-defined the video premiere. Also, I love how between verses, he just stares defiantly...
Drake - "Take Care"
High five to Drake for taking a risk like this.
Justice - "New Lands"
This vid reminds me of an amazing 80's action movie that never existed.
A$AP Rocky - "Goldie"
Grimy, stylish and totally NSFW.
Willow - "Sweater"
Lana Del Rey - "Ride"
Lana's got a sexy June Carter thing going on in this epic video.
Kill The Noise - "Kill The Noise, Pt. 1"
The sounds of dubstep, perfectly visualized.
Jay-Z & Kanye West - "No Church In The Wild"
If I ever shoot anything as amazing as that horse emerging from the smoke, I can die happy.
Diplo - "Express Yourself"
You'll need a shower after watching this. Diplo continues to be the coolest white guy on the planet.
M.I.A. - "Bad Girls"
Another game-changer from Romain Garvas. Supposedly, this vid was to celebrate women getting the right to drive in Saudi Arabia (although, they weren't allowed to shoot it there).
Die Antwoord - "Fatty Boom Boom"
This video looks like it was edited by someone with severe A.D.D. It takes a great swipe at Lady Gaga and is just full of WTF. My favourite video of the year.
